spiderman unmasked

In the movie Spider-man 2, Spidey's mask comes off more often than fans would prefer. Spider-man 2 movie review Spiderman in the comics is a VERY private person. He is EXTREMELY protective of his secret identity. If he is without his mask, he'd rather wear a paper bag over his head when tackling the villians than let anyone see his face.

There has been quite an uproar among some of the hard core spider-man fans. The way Doc Ock, Harry, Mary Jane and a train load of passengers get to see Spiderman without his mask is against the comic book tradition.. or is it?

There have been a few instances in the spiderman comics where spiderman gets unmasked.

Doc Ock's unmasking of spiderman

In a battle with Doc Ock in a very early issue of the spiderman comics, Spiderman gets defeated. He gets knocked out by Doc Ock. His mask is removed in front of J. Jonah Jameson and the police. No one believes the kid behind that mask is Spiderman. Peter plays it smart and does not show his powers unmasked. He gets a lecture for trying to impersonate Spiderman.

Other unmasked incidents

In an early issue of the Ultimate Spiderman, young Peter is defeated. He is unmasked. They see this kid and don't recognise his face. He is thrown out of the building uneventfully.

Actually, in the Ultimate universe, Peter's secret wasn't much of a secret. He was bitten in full view of everyone. He was under observation by the Oscorp organization who knew his powers. Meaning, Norman and all his cronies know that Peter is Spiderman. In his battle to the death with the Green Goblin, his mask was torn off. Harry saw his face and saved his life.. a twist from the original Spiderman stories. The clean up crew came over advising Peter to enjoy his youth. They know full well about his dual life. Mary Jane knows he is spiderman. A fledgling superhero, Spiderman has a knack of losing his costume in major fights, which doesn't really help him keep his secret identity much of a secret.

So I guess, the Spider-man 2 movie is not far off from the Ultimate spiderman series..

Loss of powers

There is also the incident where he was losing his powers due to flu. He thought he could not be Spider-man anymore. In that delirious state, he went the the Stacy's home and in a dramatic panel, he holds his mask, stands at the doorway in front of Gwen, Captain Stacy, Mary Jane and Harry he said this.

Peter : I had to tell you.. can't keep it a secret anymore.
Spiderman is finished! His career is ended.. forever!
I'm the only one.. who could know that! Because... I'm SPIDER-MAN!

Spiderman Amazing

Spiderman Adult

Costume from the new 2007 movie. Includes raised-web printed bodysuit and character hood.Adult one size fits all.

That was one mind blowing story. I found it in Essential Spider-man Volume 4, The Amazing Spider-man #86.

In the next issue, after he recovers his powers and his mind clears up, he gets the Prowler, a kid with wall climbing talent who owes Spidey a favour, to impersonate Spider-man, at the Stacy's home, while Peter is in there talking to the Stacy's. That stunt saved is secret identity, so things could go back to normal.

Spidey gone mad

Yet another noteworthy story of Spidey without his mask is in a book (no pictures, just novel form). The Untold Tales of Spiderman. The final story, The Stalking of John Doe, is set soon after Gwen Stacy is killed by The Green Goblin.

Here, Spiderman is shot with a dart that contains a venom that drives a man mad. His attacker, Kraven then hunts him down. Spiderman flees and as he loses his mind, he takes off his mask and the top part of his suit, so that when he goes berserk, no one would know that it is Spiderman gone amok. In his weakened state, his is subdued by a dozen policemen, whom even in his delirious state, he is careful not to hurt. Then he is warded in a mental hospital. What follows is a captivating story about the demons in his mind, and of how his memory of his lost love, triggered by the Gwen lookalike doctor, helps him recover his sanity, in time to face Kraven..

Spiderman's troubled life

In the comics, Spiderman does take off his mask voluntarily. When he sits high above the rooftops, to ponder about his personal problems, where others cannot see him, he takes off his mask as he ponders over his troubled life. The spirit of the moments like these is captured beautifully in Tobey Maguire's portrayal of Spiderman in Spider-man and Spider-man 2.
