Harry Osborn

Harry Osborn is the son of Norman Osborn. The Green Goblin.

It's funny how Spider-man complicate Peter's life.

The friendship Harry Osborn and Peter Parker go way back to their school days. Initially, Harry was a pal of Flash Thompson. Later on, he got to know Peter and they eventually became best of friends.

Harry Osborn in Spider-man movie

When the Spider-man movie begins, Peter and Harry are already pals. Peter's the brainy geek, while Harry stands up for Peter against the school bullies. Both are outsiders. Harry has changed schools so many times and never could fit in. Being the riches kid around affects a guys self esteem (like real!)

Peter, the school nerd is an outsider too. The 2 are firm friends. Peter spouts out science jargon to Harry who in turn uses Peter's words to impress Mary Jane. Both became rivals from Mary Jane's love. Harry dated M.J. initially. Later, M.J. developed a crush on Spiderman, but by the end of Spider-man, she realized she was in love with Peter.

Harry's dad, Norman, is warmer to Peter than to his own son. He loves Pete for his brilliance. He looks down on Harry as Harry's no science whiz. Harry at times, Harry feels that his dad loves Peter more than Harry. That can be seen in Harry's outburst in Spider-man 2.

In the movie, Harry practically hero worships his death. He blames his dad's death on Spiderman and vowed to avenge his father. At the end of Spider-man 2, he finds that Spiderman is his best pal, Peter. After his father's death, Harry told Pete that Pete is the only family he has left. This discovery leaves Harry in a rather bad state. He does not want to hurt Peter but he wants to avenge his father by killing Spiderman. The next Spider-man movie should be very interesting, where Harry's concerned.

Harry in Spiderman comics

In the original spiderman comics, Harry and Peter were also best of friends. Pete's the brains who helped Harry with his schoolwork. In turn, before Pete got his powers, Harry helped Pete out against the school bullies.

As they went on in college, they became room mates. Harry dated Mary Jane while Peter dated Gwen Stacy.

Harry's dad's dual identity and Spiderman got in the way. Harry ended up taking drugs. After his dad's death, he was bitter and wanted to avenge his father. Harry indeed followed his dad's footsteps. He took on his dad's Green Goblin's persona and attacked spiderman. A tragic figure. He was into drugs and all.

Harry in the Ultimate Spiderman

In the Ultimate Spiderman, there is another twist.
Yes, Harry and Peter are friends. Peter, a very shy boy was targetted by the bullies. Harry was a cool guy who would hang out with the tough guys. He had the respect of these bullies and will stand up for Peter. He gets Peter to do his homework for him. When Peter got bitten by the spider from Norman's labs, Uncle Ben decided against suing the Osborns. After all, Harry is probably the only friend Peter has and he did not want to endanger their friendship.

Although Harry appeared tough on the outside, he was hurt by the way his dad treats him. When he talks to his dad while his dad's on the phone, his dad would get someone to take the kid out of the room. He lacked parental affection. He is kept in the dark about his dad's green goblin persona. He was there when Spiderman fought Green Goblin to the death. He saw his father's terrifying transformation. He saw Peter in the spiderman costume with his mask torn off. He saw Peter trying to save people from a falling metal block while Green Goblin was trying to kill him.

Here's the catch. In the Ultimate universe, Spiderman did not kill Green Goblin. Harry did.

That monster that was his dad was killing Peter and that would lead to the deaths of the people below. Harry's pleas to his dad to stop fell on deaf ears. In a final, desperate, heroic act, Harry took a metal slab and stabbed the green goblin from behind, saving Peter's life and the life of the others. Upon his death, the Green Goblin reverted back to Norman Osborn.
