Aunt May
Peter Parker's Aunt May is a prominent figure in Peter's life.
Peter was orphaned as a baby. May and Ben took in their nephew and raised Peter as their only child.
Peter Parker was the son of Richard Parker. Richard and his wife died in a plane crash in Algeria. In an old king-size special issue of the Amazing Spiderman, Peter was asked to move a trunk to the basement by his Aunt May. The trunk slipped. When he lunged to stop it, he gripped too hard and accident tore the hinges apart. A newspaper clipping about his parents death, claiming that they were spies plotting against their country, slipped out of the trunk.
He was upset and wanted to find out the truth for himself. As spiderman, he hitches a lift from Richard Reed, from the Fantastic four and goes to Algeria to investigate. He finds his father's membership card with his father's name signature in the Red Skull's files. His father was employed by the evil spymaster, Red Skull. That implied that his dad was a traitor.
Red Skull sends the Finisher after Spidey. After Spiderman defeats the Finisher, he grills him for information about Richard Parker, his father. Richard Parker was a double agent, serving his own country as a mole. Once the skull found out about it, the Finisher was sent to kill off Richard Parker.
In reality, Peter Parker's parents were heros. Spiderman went on and got the evidence he needed to clear his father's name.
Where were we?
Oh yeah. Back to Aunt May.. Sorry, that's what you get when you are going through a pile of old Spiderman comics
Aunt May and Peter's secret identity
To Aunt May, Spiderman is a masked menace. She believes what the Bugle says about him. At least in the earlier Spiderman comics. She hates it that her nephew, Peter risks his life taking photos of that dangerous characterAunt May dotes on Peter. to her, Peter is her fragile, sensitive nephew. Awkward with girls. Shies aways from sports. For many years, Peter never dared tell Aunt May his secret. He was worried she would not be able to take it. What if she makes him give it up. It was only as an adult, when he was already a teacher, that Aunt May found out his secret. That was The Amazing Spiderman #38
He was sleeping soundle, badly injured from a major battle, but Spidey's used to it. Aunt May happened to drop by. She saw his costume lying around. His web shooters. She saw him so badly beaten up and knew his secret. She took his mask with her and spent a day away trying to come to terms with it.
The entire Amazing Spider-man #38 was about Aunt May and Peter. An amazing, highly personal story, with strong, expressive graphics that show what Aunt May and Peter are going through. Aunt May confronts Peter, with his mask. At first, Peter tries to deny it, but Aunt May tells him to stop those lies. Finally he confesses. He goes on to tell her about why he has to be Spider-man. That uncle Ben was dead because of him and he had to do it, in memory of uUncle Ben. May tells him too her awful secret. The day Ben died, she and Ben had a small argument. He left the house. If she had gone out and asked him to come back into the house, he would not have been there where the thief shot him. He would still be alive.
If you have watched Spider-man 2, you'll see a rather similar scene. Aunt May (Rosemary Harris) shares with Peter (Tobey Maguire) know she miss Ben terribly. She goes on to blame herself for Ben's death. Peter wanted to go himself but Ben wanted to drive him. If she had asked Ben to stay behind instead, he'd still be alive. Peter told her it was his fault. Ben drove him to the library but he never went there. He wanted to win some money, which he did. But the guy wouldn't pay up. Then the cheat got robbed. Peter could have stopped the thief, but he did not. He wanted revenge. The thief wanted to use Uncle Ben's car, but Uncle Ben wouldn't let him. So the thief shot Uncle Ben. Uncle Ben died for being the only person to do the right thing that night. Aunt May was very upset and left.

Throughout their relationship, Peter would lie to keep Aunt May from knowing his secret identity. Even in Ultimate Spiderman. When Peter was out, as Spiderman, battling Doc Ock and then Kraven in a single night, Aunt May stayed up waiting for him. He returned at 3 a.m. to face her questions. This Aunt May is a very sharp, no nonsense woman. She saw through all his lies. He said he was at the Bugle. She said she called there and they said he hadn't been in for a week. He said he was at Mary Jane's and she said she called there and Mary said he was at the library. Peter was grounded until he could tell her the truth. She was hurt by his lies. Like the Aunt May in Amazing Spider-man was hurt by all the years Peter had lied about his dual life.
Aunt May, though old, is a spunky character.
In the Ultimate Spider-man, she can intimidate J. Jonah Jameson.
In the Amazing Spider-man, once she knows her sweet nephew is Spider-man, she sets out on a one woman mission to clear up Spider-man's image.
In Spider-man 2, Doc Ock grabs Aunt May and holds her hostage. Doc Ock goads Spider-man into coming for him, but sets up a trap, with a knife in one of tentacles, ready to stab Spiderman as he comes towards him. Aunt May, shocked at Doc Ocks audacity whacks Doc at the opportune moment, causing Doc Ock to miss.
Aunt May is a key character in Spiderman stories. She is like his mom. He loves her dearly too. In spider-man 2, it was her conversation with him about heros, that inspired him to be Spiderman again.
